„Euro-Jazz“– an internet project of Czech Radio 3 (Vltava)
Concept: Separated web page devoted to jazz, with the majority proportion of European production.
- Target group: approximately 25-60 years old, a listener with a pronounced jazz flair, active jazz concerts visitor with higher-than-average interest in culture.
- Part of the web page is a continuous 24 / 7 jazz stream (player) compiled by G-selector, which can be used in the future as an independent jazz station in DAB. The dramaturgy does not coincide with a program of the Vltava and can therefore be used as part of the airtime on the Vltava time to time.
Idea – mainly European focus
The European jazz is a unique phenomenon, which connects the original American genre with elements of local cultures. Not clearly defined but in Europe the most widely symbolized by such jazz label as ECM (Germany). The phenomenon has recently been described by various publicists (ie. Stuart Nicholson: Is Jazz Dead? Or has it moved to a new address?, Routledge, 2005).
There is no station / internet project presenting the European jazz at the global level yet. Typical digital stations are focused only on specific jazz genres (swing, bop, jazz rock) or have national character (presenting mostly jazz of the respective country). Furthermore, disregard place of origin of broadcasting, the stations are dominant in American jazz provenance, often middle-stream jazz. Jazz Internet project with the main focus on European jazz is well recognizable in a vast majority of Internet radio stations.
Program
The „sound code“ category in the G-selector allows us to fill the leader of the band’s origin (which we do since the beginning of 2010). When sufficiently loaded, we are able to create a daily program representing in various percentage jazz from European countries. Namely it means:
• 20% of Czech jazz, 40% of other European jazz, 30-40% of American jazz
• The program cannot be circumvented without American jazz (if only because American artists may be more recognizable for the audience), but the ratio would mean that the European jazz would have been on the same level as American jazz in the broadcasting time.
• The ratio may of course vary depending on the situation, or set up differently depending on the part of the day (ie. at night could be a greater percentage of U.S. jazz).
• The ratio of Czech jazz is fully adequate to its promotion abroad.
In addition to the daily program the European character is reflected in the thematic blocks. For example the „European jazz hour“ might present jazz from various European countries at a specific time. A combination with the genre criterion is possible (ie. Russian jazz-rock hour).
Program blocks
- The basics form accessible blocks of Modern mainstream – present mainly quality jazz (including straight-ahead, world jazz, funk jazz, jazz rock)
- At night and in the evening: jazz blocks for more experienced listeners (including free jazz).
- In the morning, at night and at noon: blocks of older music - Mostly Bop, Hard bop hour, Swing Only
- Enhanced Thematic Selections: An hour evening blocks of European jazz, Czech jazz, Free jazz and experimental, Nu Jazz and Electronic, Pop - Jazz Hour ...
- Live concerts recordings from the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) or Czech radio production, longer footage (approx. 2 hours), a minimum of editing, annotated introduction ( probably 8 to 10 pm)
- At night (according to the nature of the show in the morning, too): Reprise of the Czech Radio 3 jazz shows: „Jazzofon“, Jazzlive, „Noční vlna jazzu“, „Mezinárodní festival jazzového piana“
